Plett's favourite otter turned up with an octopus and 15 crabs for breakfast, snow turned parts of the country into a Christmas movie set, and Mpumalanga's Panorama Route just landed on a list of the world's most dog-friendly road trips. Not a bad week for wildlife and weather.

Mpumalanga's Panorama Route has landed at number 10 on a global ranking of the world's most dog-friendly road trips, the only South African entry on the list. AutoTrader counted six service stations and 17 outdoor stops along the R532/R36, putting it alongside Florida's Overseas Highway and Spain's Costa Brava. Worth remembering next time the dog's coming along for the Blyde River Canyon views.

South Africa's latest snowfall has been serving up proper winter wonderland scenes, snow-covered roads forcing closures on the N2/R56 towards Kokstad, mountain adventurers turning the drifts into content, and one creator's clip through the snowy mountains looking straight out of a Christmas movie. Who needs an overseas winter getaway when the Drakensberg's doing this?

Plett's favourite local otter is back on his rounds, Oscar was spotted hauling up an octopus and about 15 crabs for breakfast on his morning forage past Offshore Adventures and Beacon Island Resort. If you spot him yourself, keep your distance, 20 to 30 metres and zoom in rather than closing in, and leash any dogs nearby.
